International Baccalaureate Diploma
Education for tomorrow’s world:
The IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization), a
non-profitable education foundation based in Switzerland,
offers the Diploma Program for the students in their final
two years of secondary education.
The IBO aims to assist schools in their endeavors to develop
the individual talents of young people and teach them to
relate the experiences of the classroom to the realities of
the world outside. At the end, the IB students become
critical thinkers, lifelong learners and compassionate
individuals.
What
makes the IB special ? ( Unique characteristics)
At the core of the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) are
three unique initiatives. These three components are
outside the regular curriculum and are designed to allow
students to make the lessons learned inside the classroom
their own. It is these three initiatives that make the IBDP
student unique and sought after by the most prestigious
universities in the world.
Theory of Knowledge
: Is an interdisciplinary
course that explores the very meaning of the word knowledge. Classwork in TOK focuses on questions about how
we learn things, and what do we consider knowledge.
Students are introduced to the core ideals and central
tenants of various academic disciplines. The core
requirement of TOK is a 1,500 word essay which analyzes the
meaning of knowledge and wisdom.
One unique aspect of the TOK course at SelaQui is a
bi-monthly Sunday informal discussion. Students from both
IB years gather around coffee and cookies to discuss a TOK
topic chosen by the students themselves. Faculty are often
involved, but strive to maintain a lower profile and let the
students guide the discussion.
CAS (Creativity, Action &
Service ) :
All IB students are
required to perform a prescribed number of hours engaged in
activities that can be defined as creativity, action and/or
service. Creativity can range from producing a painting for
display in a public place to making a webpage. Action
involves the student in outdoor physical activity. With
SelaQui being located in the foothills of the most beautiful
mountain range in the world, we often take the students for
high altitude treks. Service is included in this component
of the IB curriculum in order to involve the students with
life outside of their school grounds.
Recent service projects include; assisting at a school for
mentally challenged students, planning and conducting a
hygiene awareness workshop in SelaQui village and during the
school breaks several individual students were engaged in
teaching at village level government primary schools.
Recent creativity projects include: maintenance of the IB
blogs (www.ibselaqui.blogspot.com);
posters and boards for the science department depicting
various scientific processes; clay modeling for display
around the school grounds.
Recent action projects include: scaling Nag Tibba peak at a
height of 10,000 feet; trekking up Bhadraj Hill overlooking
the school; “Cycling for a Cause” , a anti-drug cycling
campaign; and participated in “Mountain Survival Course”
and, of course, every student’s favorite action activity
white-water rafting for a stretch of 14 km down the Ganga
River at Rishikesh.
CAS is an essential part of the IB in that it allows
students to express themselves in a variety of ways; it
establishes a love for outdoor activity in students who
spend most of their time in academic pursuits; and shows
them that in order for one to be truly educated, one must
show compassion and awareness towards the world around them.
Extended Essay
: The extended essay is the
most ambitious of the three IB core components. Each
student at the end of the IB produces an essay of 4,000
words based on their own independent research. This allows
the student to delve deeply into a subject in which they are
interested. This research allows the student to get a taste
of what it is like study a particular subject at a
university level, while still in secondary school. |
